The local market has always been swarmed by smartphones from budget to flagship category but can CloudFone Next prove to be the next big thing and could it deliver what you need in a local flagship device? Let’s find out.

Design

CloudFone Next is made up of metal backing with rounded plastic caps on top and bottom. Moving to the top is where the 3.5mm headphone jack is situated while at the bottom is the micro USB port with two speaker grilles(only the right one works). Up front, it will greet you with 5.2-inch FHD screen with 2.5D Gorilla Glass 3 on top for protection and the chin that houses the home button and doubles as a fingerprint scanner. Furthermore, the 8MP selfie camera is accompanied by a LED flash.

Going to the right side is where you will find the power button and the volume rocker. At the back is where the 16MP shooter camera with LED flash is established and the “Next” moniker. The metal backing is removable and will allow you to insert dual micro sim card and a microSD card.

Handling the device with one hand is a piece of cake and provides good grip. The overall build quality of the Next is great but the design could be better for a flagship device.

Display

Sporting a 5.2-inch 1080p IPS display at 424 ppi, colors are pleasing to the eyes with great viewing angles. Using the device in broad daylight would be no problem here. There’s really nothing much to say here but a job well done.

Camera

The rear camera is equipped with 16MP f/2.0 PDAF Samsung sensor with LED flash accompanied by an 8MP front-facing camera with LED flash as well.

Outdoor shots resulted with good quality as details were sharp with natural colors. Same can be said on indoor shots with sufficient lighting producing good depth-of-field on close shots.

Taking images at night or with low-light will result to noise on the photo with the lack of details.

The 8MP selfie camera is a reliable shooter on outdoors with just the right amount of sharpness and as well as with low-light, thanks to its front-facing LED flash.

Recording video on its 16MP main camera can take up to 1080p @ 30fps.

Performance

Under the hood, it sports a Qualcomm Snapdragon 430 SoC octa-core CPU clocked at 1.4GHz paired with 4GB RAM and 32GB expandable storage via microSD card slot.

Internal setup is sufficient enough as your daily driver thanks to its 4GB RAM that allows switching apps smoothly. Expect casual games to be handled very well by the device but playing graphic intensive games might require to tone down the settings a bit to achieve playable frame rates.

The fingerprint scanner performed accurately with decent unlocking speed. Not very fast as the others but good enough for its price tag.

Battery

Next is powered by 3000mAh battery with support for Quick Charge 3.0.
Charging the device from zero is a breeze as it takes only an hour to fill its tank. Testing its battery provides 28 hours of standby time with 4 hours screen-on-time which is pretty impressive for the Next.

Audio

Don’t be fooled by its dual speaker grilles at the bottom as only one of them works. The sound on the speaker was a bit weak with fair quality.

Pricing and Verdict

CloudFone Next was released in October with a price tag of P9,999. CloudFone really did a good job on their flagship device that surprisingly provides amazing battery performance with still some room for improvement for the next iteration of the Next.

Pros
– great battery performance
– good camera quality
– front-facing LED flash
– suited for moderate gaming
– large RAM

Cons
– so-so audio
– fingerprint scanner could be improved
– design could be better
