So why, Samsung?

The Samsung Galaxy S8 has a long list of features under its name. Enough, to make us forget what happened to the Note 7. RIP.

From the revolutionary design, to the latest chipset down to the digital assistant Bixby, it seems something is missing? Oh yes, the camera.

The Galaxy S8 uses a 12MP main camera with f/1.7 bright aperture and it can even record up to 4K resolution with Optical Image Stabilization in tow. So far, so good.

What about the selfie camera? A minor upgrade was made from 5MP of the S7 to 8MP of the S8 with the addition of face detection autofocus. Not bad.

But why are we still seeing single sensors on both sides? The Verge says it was probably already great and it’s not about the ‘main’ camera anymore.

To prove their point, the main camera of the S7 was so great that it can match up Google Pixel and iPhone 7 in most conditions.

“If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it”

Samsung seems to stick on the saying “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it”, as they focused on upgrading the “more” important sensor – the front camera. It makes sense when you think of it since the selfie camera was always left behind since 2000.

Instead of selling “the best smartphone camera out there” on the Galaxy S8 unpacked event, Samsung explored and differentiated themselves in the sea of smartphones. A fact, where they spent two minutes talking about the S8’s camera, compared to the usual 5-8 mins before. When you are standing on the stage, it’s long, believe us.

By spending lesser time on upgrading the camera, Samsung engineers allocated more participation in developing new design, larger screens, and a new AI called Bixby. And so far, fans around the world are drooling and even iPhone users are considering switching. We know a guy.

Does it mean no more dual-camera for the S series? No.

However, it doesn’t mean Samsung is not going to ride the dual-camera trend. For the past years, the Note line always if not, almost feature the latest technologies and shares it to the S series on a later date. They even teased the dual-ISP technology for their latest 8995/9xxx series chipset that will most probably debut on the Note 8.
