No More San Miguel Telecom
It’s official, San Miguel’s plans to enter as 3rd telco network is over after PLDT and Globe announced that they will be buying the telecom business of SMC.
This move is both good and bad for consumers consider a 3rd telco would disrupt the market by making cheaper mobile internet and home broadband DSL plans. But the good side of this deal is that the 700MHz whitespace spectrum that supposedly reserved for San Miguel will be shared between PLDT and Globe while some if it will be utilized by the incoming players.

SMC’s assets including the infrastructures from sites and radio equipment are worth Php 70 billion ($1.5B) in total on which the two big telecom players will have to split.
On the other hand, PLDT assures a win situation for all parties involved. But how about for consumers? Well, SMART (sub company of PLDT), already looking forward improving the coverage and quality of its mobile network once they have started utilizing the 700MHz spectrum across the country.
The deal may be closing the consumer’s dreams of another 3rd telco players with more affordable and better quality mobile network services. But I think there is still benefits here for consumers and that’s the opening of 700MHz broadband spectrum.
