The newly announced Sony Xperia X Performance, X, and XA are not yet released in the market. But few individuals are now speculating that Sony may eventually announce the Xperia Z5 and Z5 Premium flagship phablet successor with a 4K HDR screen panel. This is likely in the form of Xperia X Premium or another model name as Sony confirmed to stop the Z-series naming convention.

More on the 4K HDR LCD screen, the possibility is endless as the company recently introduced 4K Bravia HDR TVs with Triluminos and X-Reality display engines in the Philippines.

Also, JDI or Japan Display–a joint company under the management of Toshiba, Sony Corporation, and Hitachi–has recently demoed a working 10-inch 24:9 HDR panel with Full HD 1080 resolution (2880 x 1080 pixels). They able to achieve such feature through White Magic technology. We will know more about this feature in the coming months, and of course, to confirm if Sony will indeed use the 4K HDR display panel in Xperia X and Z5 Premium successor.

4K HDR vs Super AMOLED – Which is better?

As AMOLED screens become more popular and affordable than LCD in 5-inch and under smartphones, Sony will either embrace AMOLED or create a competing hardware to make its lineup more compelling. The 4K resolution is one of the steps (Z5 Premium), but HDR is likely the more radical solution.

The main difference of HDR to AMOLED or Super AMOLED in Samsung Galaxy smartphones is the detail highlights and saturation. HDR, as seen on Sony Bravia TVs, retain more highlights and produce brighter display viewing output than standard LCD. On the other hand, Super AMOLED has saturated and deeper contrast than LCD.

I think the actual difference will only be noticeable when we have the 4K HDR smartphones panel available in the market for comparison. Right now, all we have to do is wish for it to happen. With more the options, the better for consumers.

What do you think of the HDR screen? Will it produce better, sharper viewing experience than AMOLED?
