OPPO Reno 2 Unboxing and First Impression – Feels Like A Flagship

OPPO has slightly veered away from its original branding and has started to push its newest Reno 2 Series. The emergence of a new brand under its umbrella signifies that OPPO is now playing big. It’s not the same brand that we used to know from several years ago. The newly announced Reno 2 that’s priced at P28,990 is hovering around the flagship-killer category. But for that price, what exactly are you getting? This is the Reno 2 Unboxing and First Impression.

Unboxing the OPPO Reno 2

Reno 2 comes in a white, clean, and minimal retail box. Dissecting what’s inside reveals the manual and warranty card, a sim ejector tool, the charging brick that features 20W VOOC charging alongside its USB Type-C cable, and a soft pink synthetic leather case that goes together with our Sunset Pink Reno 2. Surprisingly, you also get free earphones.

While the unboxing experience is standard, we love how OPPO included a leather case. It’s smoother and softer in the hands and longevity is better than the old clear jelly case.

The Sunset Pink shines in a soft pink hue that all the girls will surely adore. If that’s not your cup of tea, Ocean Blue and Luminous Black are your other options.

Aside from the color and the cameras, the design of Reno 2 screams nothing but premium — thanks to the metal frame sandwiched by Corning Gorilla Glass 6 panels. Starting from the back, you have the familiar nub that protects the lenses of the flushed cameras and OPPO’s familiar imprints. Flip the device over and you are greeted by the gorgeous fullscreen. It’s an FHD+ AMOLED panel, so the colors are extra punchy. It’s also bright too, reaching 500nits with ease. With no fingerprint scanner in sight, this only means that you’re dealing with an under-screen scanner technology.

Taking a tour around the phone, the bottom view reveals the speaker, USB Type-C port, microphone, and a headphone jack. As for the buttons, the power key is on the right-hand side while the volume rocker is on the opposite end. We do have to say that tactility isn’t the best thing about these buttons. They are a bit on the spongy side.

Up top reveals the hidden shark-fin pop-up camera that made the original Reno a popular device. It swivels out in under a second and swivels in automatically when it detects freefall.

While Reno 2 is sporting an extravagant design like no other, it’s the cameras that really matter. OPPO aims to invite everyone to be a story maker with these cameras. Every captured moment, there’s a story behind it. Just like how OPPO wants to put it, #AnyoneisAStorymaker and the Reno 2 makes storytelling a lot easier.

The main cameras let you tell stories in four different ways — the 48MP main lens captures the best moments in front of you even in the harshest conditions, like how Ultra Dark Mode reveals subjects in the shadows. If there’s not enough space in the frame, the 8MP ultrawide ensures that every single moment in front of you is taken.

While storytelling almost always involves actions, sometimes, the most meaningful narratives come from a closer and dramatic perspective. The 13MP telephoto lets you get up-close and personal with its 5x hybrid zoom and up to 20x digital zoom. And if you want to see a whole new perspective, the 2MP lens lets you shoot macro shots to share big stories out of small things.

If you want to be more elaborate, Reno 2 delivers incredibly stable videos of up to 60fps. Thanks to the combo of Electronic and Optical Image Stabilizations.

When you want to be the focal point, the 16MP selfie camera is the first pop-up camera with a video bokeh effect.

Don’t forget that Reno 2 is a capable power device, too. The Snapdragon 730G chipset, with the G standing for Gaming, means you can play the most demanding games while keeping the innards cool and the gameplay stable. A large 4000mAh battery is powering the Reno 2, alongside 20W VOOC 3.0 fast charging. It lets you go up to 51% in just half an hour.

As mentioned earlier, Reno 2 is priced at P28,990. And such, you are getting premium and unique design, versatile cameras, and a capable chipset that can reliably game, too. If you want to know more about OPPO’s latest premium mid-range phone, make sure to stay tuned for our full review.
