It is the battle of the Samsung J7 Prime and the Asus Zenfone 3 Max 5.5 with about 3000 peso difference, which of the two do you think is more suited for you?

Mabuhay, Manila. You got Drew here for Manila Shaker. And join me in our latest phone off between the Samsung J7 Prime vs Asus Zenfone 3 Max 5.5.

Design

The Samsung Galaxy J7 Prime is made up of metal unibody with rounded corners. The chin houses the home button that doubles as a fingerprint scanner flanked by two capacitive navigation keys. The power button is on the right side and above it is the speaker grille. On the other side are the volume rocker, a sim card tray for the primary SIM and another card tray for the second sim and the microSD. Finally, the 3.55mm headphone jack and microUSB port are located at the bottom.

The Asus Zenfone 3 Max 5.5 body is made up of metal with plastic caps for the top and bottom. Up front is a 2.5D curved gorilla glass 4 with the chin housing the non back-lit capavitice keys for navigation. The power button is located on the right side below the volume rocker and the opposite end houses the hybrid dual nano SIM slot. The finger print sensor can be found right below the rear facing camera setup.

Both devices are comfortable to the hands with no problems navigating one hand. It is hard to pick between the two since both of them are on par with each other in terms of build and quality so it will come down to user preference.

For the design, we are giving it a tie.

Display

Both mid-range devices measures at 5.5-inch at 1080p with 401 pixels per inch featuring IPS LCD for the Max and PLS TFT for the Prime. The J7 Prime’s screen is much cooler and focuses on contrast and saturation as opposed to the yellow-ish tone for the Max which comes out paler comparing.

Automatic brightness is not found on the J7 Prime as it lacks an ambient light sensor which will entail shuffling through the quick settings menu in broad daylight or being partially blinded when checking your phone at night.

We’re giving this to the Zenfone 3 Max

Camera

Samsung J7 Prime is equipped with a 13mp rear facing shooter set at F/1.9 aperture compared to the Zenfone 3 Max 5.5 set at a higher 16MP f/2.0 aperture shooter.

Shots in broad daylight are no problem for both with the J7 Prime producing natural color but tend to overexpose on outdoor shots while Zenfone 3 Max 5.5 lacks in detail overall that came in pale.

Don’t expect to have clear photos at low light scenarios and at night as both units struggled at capturing details and white balance. Shots were mostly grainy for the Zenfone 3 Max 5.5 and overexposed for the J7 prime.

The 8MP f/1.9 aperture of the J7 Prime stands out capturing more details compared to Zenfone 3 Max 5.5 8MPf/2.2 aperture selfie shooter.

It’s another tie this round.

Performance

Both devices are equipped with octa core CPUs and performed similarly in antutu benchmarks ranging from 43-44k points with the Exynos 7870 clocked at 1.6Ghz for J7 Prime and Qualcomm Snapdragon clocked at 1.4GHz for Zenfone 3 Max 5.5. Performing basic tasks and casual games would prove sufficient with the both paired with 3GB RAM.

Playing graphic intensive games are a different story however where the experience of Nova 3, CSR Racing 2, and NBA 2K17 was handled with decent playable frame rates for the Zenfone 3 Max 5.5 while J7 Prime struggled for the most part.

Clearly, Zenfone 3 Max 5.5 wins this one.

Battery

The biggest difference would come down to the battery with the Zenfone 3 Max 5.5 coming in with 4100mAh.

Charging devices from zero to 100 percent is as expected with the Zenfone 3 max 5.5 taking almost 3 hours while the J7 Prime took almost 2hrs and 30mins with its 3300mAh battery.
Screen-on-time for J7 Prime is up to 5hrs compared to 4hrs for the Zenfone 3 Max 5.5, again, asus said that this can be adressed on the next software update.

Additionally, the Zenfone 3 Max 5.5 can double as a powerbank with its proprietary reverse charging dongle from micro USB to USB A.

Zenfone 3 Max 5.5 wins this one.

Audio

Standard mono speaker is found on both device with no support for hi-res audio but J7 Prime proves to be louder when cranking the volume to the max.

Clearly, J7 prime wins this one.

Pricing and verdict

Samsung J7 Prime will be priced at P13,990 ($281) while Asus Zenfone 3 Max 5.5 is officially at P10,995 pesos SRP or $300 to $220 USD via Asus Philippines estimated to arrive at P12,995 – P13,995 pesos or about $300 USD.

At about 3000 peso difference, you could either go for J7 Prime’s camera which is perfect for social media users OR you could go with an all-around device for the Zenfone 3 Max 5.5.
