Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8+ goes official

After a month of leaks and rumors, Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8+ has been officially unveiled in New York.

Design and Display

DJ Koh introduces the IP68 rated Galaxy S8 as the new era of smartphone designs and by eliminating the bezels on the sides and expanding the screen to the top and bottom portion, the result gave us the Infinity Display.

The Galaxy S8 and S8+ are sized at 5.8-inch and 6.2-inch, respectively, while using a Super AMOLED screen with an extra wide 18.5:9 aspect ratio. It supports HDR10 where Amazon will provide the content exclusively. Additionally, it is covered in Corning Gorillas Glass 5.

With all screen up front, you might be wondering where the home button is? Samsung did not remove it but rather put it beneath the display that also features 3D touch.

Battery and Security

The battery of the Galaxy S8 and S8+ packs in a 3000mAh and 3500mAh of juice, respectively. Samsung still uses their own fast adaptive charging feature here. The new 8-point battery safety check made sure that the device will not explode.

You can charge it wireless by buying a separate wirelss charger that is compatible with WPC and PMA7.

Coming from the Note series, the iris scanner arrives on the Galaxy S8 together with a face recognition.

Camera

All your point and shoot photography will be captured by the 12MP Dual Pixel sensor, -the same with the S7 but only with better post-processing by registering multiple exposures. Can it record at 1000fps? No.

The 8MP front sensor, on the other hand, features an autofocus that also comes with face detection security.

Chipset

As expected, it’s a Snapdragon 835 and Exynos 8895 chipsets for both devices where SoC will vary in different regions. That is paired with 4GB/6GB RAM and 64GB/128GB onboard storage with an option to expand via the microSD card slot.

Bixby

Bixby is the attempt of Samsung to challenge Google Assitant and Apple’s Siri.

However, Bixby plays as a major feature in the Galaxy S8 rather than just an additional AI.

It even has its own physical key where you can speak or type your request after pressing or just by saying “Bixby”.

Swiping to the right from the home screen, shows a screen of the user’s reminders, alarms and weather forecast all in one place.

It also analyzes the usage patterns and provides suggested information, apps, and functions based on your routine.

A new search function comes inside Bixby by recognizing images, landmarks, and languages.

Additionally, Samsung Connect “connects” each smart devices in your home through Bixby.

THe Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8+ shimmers in Midnight Black, Orchid Gray, Arctic Silver, Coral Blue and Maple Gold. US gets dibs first on April 21 while Europe will have it on April 28. Prices start at $750USD(Php37,600) and $850(Php42,600) for the S8 and S8+ respectively.
