Apple's Powerful Bionic Chipset

For the past several years, Apple has always bested its Android chipset counterpart — releasing significantly powerful CPU & GPU than what Qualcomm has to offer. But for 2020, it seems like the chipset manufacturer has finally caught up. In an early Snapdragon 865 performance preview published by hothardware, benchmarks show it can go head-to-head with the Bionic A13.

Snapdragon 865 (in some ways) is better than A13 Bionic found in the Apple iPhone 11 Series

Hotwardware ran several benchmarking tools but the most popular apps that have somewhat become a standard are Antutu and Geekbench. The latter measures the sole performance of CPU — both single-core and multi-core aspect. While the former measures the overall device performance.

Snapdragon 865 features the Kryo 585 CPU that’s comprised of four low-power Cortex-A55 and another set of four Cortex-A77 that goes up to 2.4GHz in maximum multi-core workload. Additionally, Qualcomm made one core of the A77 capable of maximizing up to 2.8GHz for a performance boost. As for the reference device, it’s a 5.9″ phone running Android 10 backed up by 12GB LPDDR5 and 128GB flash storage.

That said, the test included two modes for the Snapdragon 865 reference handset — normal(n) and performance(p). There’s a very slight difference between the two, at least based on the Geekbench result. The 865 managed to score 925(n) and 930(p) in the single-core segment. While the multi-core segment shares the same story, scoring 3435(n) and 3445(p). iPhone 11’s Bionic 13 is still way ahead in single-core performance as it scored 1329, although it’s also ahead in multi-core, the gap is negligible with a score of 3468.

As for the Antutu benchmark of SD 865 vs Bionic 13, the tests include four categories — CPU, RAM, 3D, and UX. The overall score of Qualcomm’s flagship chipset is 557,378 while Apple’s iPhone 11 Pro managed to score an already impressive 550,985.

When compared to fellow Android devices with Snapdragon 855, the claimed up to 25% increased performance seems to be true in these benchmarks. To see it in detail, just go here. Benchmarking tools aren’t a complete reflection of real-world usage. There’s a difference between synthetic workloads vs actual workloads. This means the numbers you see may not reflect when actually using the device. That said, this gives us a good glimpse of how the Snapdragon 865 will perform once it arrives in smartphones next year. Samsung Galaxy S11 series is expected to be one of the few phones to sport the said chipset and it’s bound to be announced around February 2020.
