Xiaomi seems to be moving beyond the smartphone market.
On Monday, the Chinese smartphone giant has unveiled its first action camera to outmatch the entry-level GoPro Hero. Well, the YI ACTION CAMERAÂ totally trumped the GoPro Hero in price- and specs-wise.
The new device offers striking features and specs for a surprisingly low price of 399 CNY or just $64 – very distinctive compared to the $130 GoPro Hero. Unfortunately though, the Yi will be exclusive in China alone and won’t be available to countries outside, according to the report of The Verge.
The Yi features a 16-megapixel camera capable of shooting 1080p video at 60 frames per second. On the other hand, GoPro Hero can only shoot 1080p footage at 30 frames per second or 720p film at 60 frames.
For such a cheap cost for the device, it is amazing that it tenders a high-quality image sensor and offers 64GB of built-in storage – two times larger than that of Go Pro. Identical to the latter, Yi can also be use for up to 40 meters underwater and comes with a smartphone app that can tenuously control the camera as well as edit and share the fresh footage.
No basic cases or rigging comes with the package, but Xiaomi is offering a ‘travel edition’ for an extra 100 CNY that comes with a selfie stick. Rich variety of accessories can also be expect that will let the users attach the Yi to objects like helmets, bikes, and even pets.
Though Yi has yet to prove how it performs in real-life use, its unveiling implied the company’s aspiration to go beyond just smartphone markets, for recently the company also produced smart TVs and wearables. Since Xiaomi has not opened its market to US yet, it is planning to open its online shop focused on non-mobile phones for American market.
