Welcome, Bixby

We are a few days away from the official release of the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S8 flagship. With leaks flowing from left to right regarding with specs and price, it seems we are missing something. Oh yes, one of the main feature of the Galaxy S8: Bixby.

Bixby is Samsung’s very own Artificial Intelligence(AI) that will debut on the Galaxy S8.

Apparently, we don’t have to wait for further leaks as InJong Rhee, Executive Vice President, Head of R&D, Software and Services for Samsung introduces their own AI.

Rhee introduced Bixby as a new approach in “reinforcing deep learning concepts to the core of our user interface designs“. Adding that it is “fundamentally different from other voice agents or assistants in the market“.

Bixby’s Three Proficiency

And to back up his statement, he elaborated the three proficiency of Bixby: 1)Completeness, 2)Context Awareness and Cognitive Tolerance.

Completeness refers to supporting almost every task that the application is capable of. But for this to happen, the application must be Bixby-enabled.

Context Awareness, on the other hand, lets you call upon Bixby anytime. Once the app is Bixby-enabled, this “will allow users to weave various modes of interactions including touch or voice at any context of the application“.

Last but not the least, Cognitive Toleranceallows to understand commands with incomplete information and execute the commanded task to the best of its knowledge“. And will only ask for additional information when only needed.

And to create a more seamless and intuitive Bixby interaction, Samsung added the dedicated Bixby button. Wherein a single click on the button will let you command Bixby without the need to unlock your phone. Say, for example, calling a person.

However, it doesn’t stop there – Samsung is also planning to include Bixby in home appliances gradually – creating a Bixby ecosystem, not only in our homes but also in our lives.

Rhee added that a set of pre-installed apps are included in the Galaxy S8 launch in New York. This will allows users to get a glimpse of what Bixby has in store.

While Bixby is still young and supports only a handful of apps, Samsung will eventually release a tool (in SDK) for third-party developers.
