Why SMART and Globe stopped Unli Surf in prepaid, postpaid mobile

Status of Unlimited Surfing in the Philippines

Smart and Globe have stopped offering unlimited mobile data and surfing leaving customers with consumable data and options to go with the postpaid services. But why did these telcos stopped the Unli Surf or Unli Net promos in the first place despite launching a stricter FUP (Fair Use Policy)? Below are reasons we think have made these companies switched from unlimited to consumable mobile internet service.

Unclogged network congestion

The rise of smartphone and internet users is one of the biggest factors why our networks slow down and unable to support more consumers. Adding to it is the slow expansion of both telcos in terms of infrastructures and catching up to global standards, remember that we still had up to 42 Mbps max 4G LTE speed until this early 2016 where they launched faster LTE-Advanced.

The limited data allowance results in less stress in network capacity thus allowing more users to connect, and most of the time, faster internet speed.

Get more customers apply for postpaid, LTE or DSL home broadband

Another factor for telecommunication companies to limit the data is for their customers to avail the postpaid services such as wired and wireless broadband instead. This convert prepaid users to postpaid which means a more direct profit compared to most prepaid users consuming less than P100-P500 a month in promo subscriptions.

Subscribe to more prepaid promos

With consumable data, telcos could experiment on data allocations that would fit different types of consumers. They also have the authority to discontinue old promos while offering new ones that may sound more appealing though with almost the same features to the old ones.

One great example is Smart’s SurfMax Plus with 1GB data per day limit, which may already sound enough for typical users. Smart, however, promotes their BigBytes as options for users if they reached the daily limit.

Upon reaching their Smart SurfMax daily limit, subscribers may also switch to any Smart Big Bytes offering to continue enjoying optimal speeds.

Globe, on the other hand, has the same consumable promos but offer flexible options such as Globe GoSakto.

Fight peer-to-peer or massive Torrent users

Although telcos could limit or block P2P (peer-to-peer) in their servers, the rise in Torrent use is also one of the major problems causing degradation in internet speed and reliability to all. Limiting mobile users will help the service providers reduce the congestion in their networks.

Business and duopoly

It’s sad that duopoly is still one of the big reasons why we get substandard services and internet speed. With only two major players playing, they are able to dictate what consumers should have rather than actually providing a decent service. They also greatly prioritize their business over the benefits of consumers.
