With 6 days remaining till the Xiaomi Mi 8‘s launch, the company has released a new teaser which states that the upcoming smartphone will sport a new unlock feature. According to other Xiaomi users, the company might be suggesting that the Mi 8 will sport either a 3D facial recognition or an under-display fingerprint scanner.

Speculations about the 3D facial recognition came from leaked images that appeared this month. The photos showed that the Mi 8 has a larger notch compared to its usual size. It was later rumored that the device might feature a structured light 3D module that will make 3D facial recognition possible.

The mentioned module is expected to house a selfie camera, proximity sensor, ambient sensor, infrared lens, flood illuminator, and dot projector. These will aid the Mi 8 smartphone in scanning the user’s face in 3D even in dim lighting. If the company manages to do this, the Xiaomi Mi 8 will be the first ever smartphone that featured 3D facial recognition.

The Mi 8 is also expected to include an under display fingerprint scanner due to its poster. As seen on the poster, there’s a pattern inside the circle in the number 6. Some believe that this pattern signifies the fingerprint scanner. There is reason to believe that the upcoming Xiaomi device might feature both unlock features.

A previous leak have also mentioned that the upcoming smartphone might feature a transparent glass back.

The Xiaomi Mi 8 might feature a 6.2″ OLED notched display with FHD+ resolution and an aspect ratio of 19:9. It might be powered by the Snapdragon 845 along with 6GB of RAM and an internal storage of 128GB. The device might also be fueled by a 3,300mAh battery and run on Android Oreo. The Mi 8 might arrive with a price tag of 2,999 Yuan (approx. Php 24,703).
